The Limited Charms of the UWM Gasthaus

Other than the beer selection, it’s a drab, deflating place. The good news it will soon be replaced.

So, if the Gasthaus is to be replaced soon, why review it here so negatively? After all, what is the purpose of a restaurant or bar review? It would been wiser and less obnoxious to review it after it opens in its new location, not after a period of time in which it has not been refreshed or renovated because of its upcoming demolition. Especially considering the latter, it is unfair to compare it to UW-Madison’s Rathskeller.

The new UWM Union renderings are exciting, but they’re almost three years old at this point and the firm who created them, Workshop Architects, is unfortunately no longer involved in the project unless things have changed in recent months. It’s a real shame because Workshop is one of the best designers of student unions in the country and they put a lot of effort into this project, but I believe the state building commission chose to go with another firm. Workshop’s proposal would have ran about $160M and could have worked with approved student segregated fee increases which passed in 2012, but that ship might have sailed at this point for a few different reasons.

Lots of student drinking history in G-house, both good and not so much. Symbolic of Milwaukee & UWM lessor status in its subterranean status? Judge for yourself gentle reader

As a student I always found the beer to be wonderfully affordable. Also, it helped to be able to know about such delights as the off menu quad-burger and breakfast burritos. It probably helped to know the majority of the staff there.

Many a great time was spent on a Saturday afternoon watching Badger football or playing Smirnoff darts before heading down to North avenue.

I never knew that the Gasthaus made so much money! My guess is that it’s because it’s open to the public, and the public comes in during many UWM events (including the Union Cinema). Plus so many kids go there to graze and feed and meet each other. It’s not a beautiful place, no, but one that’s been very familiar to many since its’ inception. The new Gasthaus will probably be even better (and a better money-maker), of course!
