While the Milwaukee Children's Choir, Wisconsin Philharmonic Orchestra and "Beyond Glory" honor our troops, Alverno Presents, Soulstice Theatre, Theater Red, Florentine Opera and others present compelling performances.

Alverno Presents welcomes Nick Sanborn: Lend Me Your Voice. Sanborn will tell his own story of being a reliable sideman musician between songs, accompanied by six of his collaborative friends at the Pitman Theatre on Friday, Nov. 8 and Saturday, Nov. 9 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20, available online.

In honor of Giuseppe Verdi’s 200th birthday, the Florentine Opera Company opens their 80th Anniversary season with La Traviata at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts. The show will be held on Friday, Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 10 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets start at $39.15, available online or call 1-800-32-OPERA ext 224.

The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra will hold their inaugural MSO Composer Institute public performance on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. Five emerging composers were selected to participate in workshops and rehearsals of their works which will be performed by the orchestra for the public. The concert is free but tickets are required. Seats can be reserved here.

The Haggerty Museum’s musician-in-residence, Brett Lipschutz, will perform an experimental concert Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m. The concert is free to the public; read more about the unique performance in TCD’s preview.

Milwaukee Children’s Choir presents American Homeland: A Veterans Day Concert at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Sunday, Nov. 10 at 4:30 p.m. This show will honor all active duty and veteran military personnel. For tickets and information call (414) 221-7040.

Wisconsin Philharmonic Orchestra presents A Salute to Our Veterans: Korea and the Cold War at Carroll University’s Shattuck Auditorium on Sunday, Nov. 10 at 3 p.m. Tickets start at $27, available online or call (262) 547-1858.

Theater

Marquette University Theatre presents The Boys Next Door, a story about four men with mental challenges living in a group home together. The show will be held at Helfaer Theatre from Nov. 7-17. Tickets are $20, available online.

Peck School of the Arts Theatre presents the sketch comedy show It Was Embarrassing, So Don’t Ask from Nov. 7-10 at Kenilworth Studio 508. Performances start at 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $10, $8 for seniors and UWM faculty/staff, $5 for students (presale) or $8 (night of show) and majors get in for free. Tickets are available online or call (414) 229-4308.

Beyond Glory visits the Marcus Center for Veterans’ Day

Adapted from Larry Smith’s book, Beyond Glory is Stephen Lang’s one man show presenting the stories of 8 different veterans who received the Medal of Honor. The show comes to Uihlein Hall on Veterans Day, Monday, Nov. 11. Tickets start at $45, available online or call (414) 273-7206. A portion of all ticket proceeds will be donated to the Milwaukee Homeless Veterans Initiative.

Steve Martin’s Picasso at the Lapin Agile comes to the Soulstice Theatre Company  Nov. 7- Nov. 23. All performances are on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $21, $19 for students and seniors, available online.

Waukesha Civic Theatre presents One Night With John McGivern on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. All proceeds from this comic performance will benefit the Waukesha Civic Theatre. Tickets are $50, available online or call (262) 547-0708.

Theater Red presents A Thousand Times Goodnight, a comedy that combines the poetic language of five act Elizabethan plays with the magic of Arabian Nights. Performances will be held from Nov. 7- 9 and Nov. 14- 16 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15, available online.

The longest running midnight movie of all time, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, will be screened at the Oriental Theatre on Saturday, Nov. 9 at midnight. Tickets are $9.

Visual Art

Fluxus-associated artist Alison Knowles will perform for Woodland Pattern Book Center’s 2013 Anniversary Gala at the Milwaukee Art Museum on Friday, Nov. 8. There will be a reception and silent auction at 5:30 p.m. and the program starts at 7 p.m. Ticketing and other information can be found here.

Special Events

Milwaukee’s Rollergirls, the Brewcity Bruisers, will host the 2013 WFTDA Championships at the US Cellular Arena from Friday, Nov. 8 to Sunday, Nov. 10. Tickets start at $18, $13 for seniors/military/children 9-12; children 8 and under get in for free. Each day of games will be followed by an after party at Turner Hall.

Get a head start on holiday shopping at the always-anticipated Urban Garage Sale, taking place at Turner Hall this Saturday, Nov. 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., featuring booths from Milwaukee’s many talented creatives. Entry is $4, free for kids 10 and under.
