TCD Pick: Earth (with Altos)
One of the regular highlights of the Milwaukee Film Festival is getting to see which classic work of silent film the festival organizers will be able to unveil, pulled from the deep recesses of silver-screen history and given the live orchestral treatment it deserves. In 2010 we had Metropolis, in 2012 Blackmail, and 2013 brings Earth, a Soviet-era, politically provocative film by Aleksandr Dovzhenko about a young man’s attempt to form a collective of farmers after his grandfather’s death. The Ukrainian film will be accompanied by Altos, an 18-piece (normally 12, but expanded for the festival) post-rock collective in its own right, composed of members who also pay in Collections of Colonies of Bees, Hello Death and Volcano Choir. The film and group are both one-of-a-kind. So is the opportunity.
Earth, MFF 2013’s Festival Centerpiece, will screen only once: Friday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m. at the Oriental Theatre. Tickets are $20, $17 for Milwaukee Film members.
