TCD Pick: Muscle Shoals

Muscle Shoals is the great American musical secret you don’t know about: a tiny little city in the middle of Alabama that somehow managed to become a little pocket of rhythm and song that has shaped popular music ever since the ’60s. This documentary focuses in on some of the unassuming studios of the region, whose unique blending of ethnically diverse music helped create the sound of recordings by artists including Aretha Franklin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton and many more. Many of those musicians lend their voices and memories to the film too, so if you’re a music lover, this might be The Film of the festival for you.

Muscle Shoals will screen twice: Monday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m. at the Downer Theatre and Thursday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. at Fox-Bay Cinema.

TCD also recommends: Maidentrip, 3 p.m., Oriental; Closed Curtain, 4:30 p.m., Downer; Hannah Arendt, 4:30 p.m., Fox-Bay Cinema; Free the Mind, 7 p.m., Oriental
