TCD Pick: Stories We Tell

On the one hand, actor/director Sarah Polley’s Stories We Tell might just be what it looks like: a simple look at her and her family’s history and secrets, unraveled mostly for her own benefit. But that’s not what it looks like. Instead, Stories We Tell promises a captivating parallel to how we tell our own stories and keep our own confidences, wrapped within the tantalizing premise of a filmmaker capturing her own personal journey.

Stories We Tell screens three times: Tuesday, Oct. 1, at 9:30 p.m. at Fox-Bay Cinema; Sunday, Oct. 6, at 5:30 p.m. at the Downer Theatre; and Tuesday, Oct. 8, at 7:45 p.m. at Fox-Bay Cinema.

Extended Preview: After Tiller

It takes a lot of skill to produce a documentary about a controversial subject without falling too far into sympathy for one camp or the other. Managing editor Matthew Reddin says After Tiller does a pretty good job, following the four doctors who still perform late-term abortions in the United States and capturing their positive and negative thoughts on the path they’ve chosen.

Extended Preview: Shorts: Let’s Get Animated

Cartoon animation: it’s not just for kids anymore. Assistant managing editor Danielle McClune walks you through the variety of shorts included in this program, from the straightforward to the experimental.

TCD also recommends: Picture Day, 7 p.m., Fox-Bay Cinema; War Witch, 7:45 p.m., Downer; Billy Club10 p.m., Oriental; Informant, 10 p.m., Downer

Re-screening recommendations: Citizen Koch, 4:30 p.m., Oriental; The Institute, 5 p.m., Downer
