In “Break Up Man,” Paul (co-director Matthias Schweighofer, L) is a breakup artist who ends Toto’s (Milan Peschel) relationship for his girlfriend and ends up with the neurotic man as an accidental sidekick.

TCD Pick: Break Up Man (Thursday)

Break Up Man is the only flick running on the festival’s first evening, which is all the more reason why you should head down to the Oriental to catch this German comedy. Structurally in the vein of last year’s Starbuckthe film follows Paul, a “breakup artist” – employed to help you break up with your significant other – who ends up saddled with Toto, a neurotic, needy target who tags along post-breakup and ends up accompanying him on a road trip, buddy film-style.

Break Up Man begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Oriental Theatre. Tickets are $20, $17 for Milwaukee Film members. Immediately following the screening, Milwaukee Film will host the Opening Night Party at Discovery World. The event will feature performers including Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Evan Christian, DJ Bizzon, the Florentine Opera, Dead Man’s Carnival and DJ Madhatter, along with drinks, appetizers and a raffle. Tickets are $35 or $25 for members, or you can purchase tickets for both the film and party for $50 and $40, respectively.

Chris and Tina (Steve Oram and Alice Lowe) embark on a journey through the British Isles in "Sightseers," but the journey has gory consequences.

TCD Pick: Sightseers (Friday)

Guess we’re big on road trips today, since this British flick directed by Ben Wheatley (“Kill List”) starts with one too – this time featuring a regular guy named Chris hoping to show his reclusive girlfriend Tina the sights of the British Isles. Sounds like a sweet idea – until the vacation takes a twist, and Chris and Tina end up leaving a trail of bodies in their wake as they try to get their holiday back on track. The film’s a black comedy and culture critique all in one, the perfect opening salvo for this year’s Cinema Hooligante lineup.

Sightseers will be screened three times in the festival: Friday, Sept. 27, at 9:45 p.m. at the Oriental Theatre; Sunday, Sept. 29, at 9:45 p.m. at the Downer Theatre; and Tuesday, Oct. 8, at 10:15 p.m. at the Oriental Theatre.

Expanded Preview: Ludwig II (Friday)

Assistant managing editor Danielle McClune takes a look at Ludwig II, a biopic about the legendary Bavarian king who attempted to cultivate a kingdom of music and art in the 19th century even as the nation became swept up in the Franco-Prussian War. The film will be screened three times in the festival: Friday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m. at Fox-Bay Cinema; Wednesday, Oct. 2, at noon at the Oriental Theatre; and Sunday, Oct. 6, at noon at the Downer Theatre.

TCD also recommends: The Crash Reel, 7 p.m., Downer; When the King Tilts (by local director Drew Britton), 7:30 p.m., Fox-Bay Cinema; Bound By Flesh (inspired by Dean Jensen’s 2006 biography), 10 p.m., Fox-Bay Cinema; Shorts: The Best Damn F*#@ing Midnight Program Ever. Sh*t., midnight, Oriental
