A unique “Intro to Bread Making” class was held last Thursday, May 23 at Milwaukee’s Braise Restaurant & Culinary School. The evening started off with a thirty-minute reception featuring a complimentary cocktail and a “Braise Bite” h’orderve.
Following the reception was “Breads of Braise,” which was demonstrated and taught by Chef/Owner Dave Swanson, and featured simple Braise recipes for ciabatta, focaccia, and cherry walnut breads. Chef Swanson shared his insightful knowledge about flours, yeasts and starters, as well as how to proof and bake bread at your own home. His rather complex and advanced understanding of bread making was broken down into basic and memorable knowledge for the less experienced bread makers to grasp and remember. The class also offered bread samplings throughout the two and a half hour span, served with flavorful house made stew to pair with the samplings. Chef Swanson even gave out Braise bread recipe sheets for class participants to take home.Don’t miss out on Braise’s next culinary school classes, “Intro to Sausage Making” and “All Things Garlic!”. The concert concluded with an after party with area ska band Something To Do as concertgoers danced the evening away and went back for a second (or third) delicious cupcake.

The 26th Annual Amish Craftsmen Guild ll Family Kite Festival was held May 24-25 at Veteran’s Park. Sponsored in part by Gift of Wings kite shop, the festival drew hundreds of spectators and kite stunt teams from the region and as far away as Montreal, Canada. Each day at noon, over 500 kites were launched simultaneously to kickoff the day’s events. If you missed it, Gift of Wings is open daily with numerous types of kite for a day along the lakefront.
Milwaukee natives Ivy Spokes lit up Yield Bar on the East Side on Saturday night. These guys call their sound “Bio-Digital Rock n’ Roll”, striking an undeniably catchy balance between pop and rock n’ roll. They released their debut EP Chaos to Cosmos in 2011 and are currently finishing their first full-length album to be released this year. Ivy Spokes plays on June 27 at 4:15 p.m. at Summerfest for the Emerging Artist Series among many other Milwaukee bands.
