Who says you have to be in Kentucky to get in on the exciting Derby action?  This past Saturday, the Iron Horse Hotel hosted its third annual Kentucky Derby Party, “Talk Derby to Me.”  It felt as authentic as could be as hundreds of fashionable Milwaukeeans and guests flaunted their finest derby apparel, which of course included a sizable sighting of the infamous (oversized) derby hats.  There was even a $50 bar tab for the ‘best hat’ sported.

Derby enthusiasts crowded the hotel’s lobby and bars as they mingled and sipped on southern Mint Juleps, waiting in anticipation for the biggest race of the year.  The race was marked by the traditional “Call to the Post” trumpet tune and was broadcasted on multiple screens throughout the Brand bar as derby fans watched Orb storm to the front for the win.

The second annual Milwaukee Museum Mile took place yesterday, May 5, at five of Milwaukee’s unique East Side arts and culture museums, each of which are situated within a couple of miles of each other along the Lake Michigan shoreline. The Jewish Museum MilwaukeeCharles Allis Art Museum, Museum of Wisconsin Art at Saint John’s On The Lake, Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum, and North Point Lighthouse at Lake Park joined efforts for an afternoon consisting of free or reduced museum admissions for all, complimentary tours and refreshments, prize drawings, and even free hands on activities for children. Although the close proximity and beautiful weather made it convenient and enjoyable to walk or bike from location to location, a free, continuous shuttle bus was also provided for easy travel between locations.

The event brought together visitors of all ages and interests, for an affordable and fun way to enjoy some of the art and architectural gems located here in Milwaukee.  The no cost, art filled afternoon was definitely a Milwaukee weekend highlight.

I went to see the Museum Mile galleries/museums, and it was worth the time and effort and I’d encourage everyone to go in the future!
