RHINELANDER – Despite growing problems with understaffing and safety issues, Republican Sen. Tom Tiffany (R-Hazelhurst) is standing behind his vote to cut over 100 positions and $145 million in funding from the Dept. of Corrections budget.  As a key member of the Joint Finance Committee, Sen. Tiffany was personally involved in the decision to slash funding and ignore staff shortages in several correctional facilities.

“Sen. Tiffany was warned of safety and staffing issues at the Lincoln Hills School but failed to act to prevent the crimes that are being investigated,” said SSDC Executive Director Matt Ullsvik.

One of the emails Tiffany received on November 19, 2015 warned specifically of a “serious escalation of assaults and security breakdowns at the Lincoln Hills School.”

“Sen. Tiffany’s failure to act on these concerns proves how out of touch he is with local issues,” added Ullsvik. “Given his position on the finance committee, he could have done so much more to address the highly publicized staffing issues and safety issues that have plagued the Dept. of Corrections since 2011.”
