Wisconsin Democrats on the Inauguration of Donald Trump
MADISON, Wis. — Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Ben Wikler issued the following statement on the inauguration of Donald Trump:
“Today, as Donald Trump takes the oath of office for a second time, we can expect him to betray it almost immediately—just as he betrayed his first oath, and just as he’s broken promises nearly every day of his adult life. As we fight for all of our communities, we must remain focused on the threat of Trump’s core promise to rig our country for far-right billionaires, creating an American oligarchy that monopolizes wealth and power at the expense of everyone else. Just as Trump’s first term was defined by a massive tax scam giveaway for the rich, he’s committed in his second term to double down—all as he seeks to divide Americans, hoping to leave us too afraid of each other to notice the sacking of our kids’ future.
“Wisconsin Democrats remain committed as ever to the fight for working people—across race and ethnicity—against those trying to rip them off. In the next four years, we will remain rooted to our values, firm in our belief that everyone deserves a fair shot, and clear-eyed in our pursuit of a future in which every American is free to live with dignity and respect.
“Here in the Badger State, the first fight of this new Trump era will come to a head on April 1st, when we will protect the Wisconsin Supreme Court from wealthy special interests and defeat Brad Schimel—yet another extreme Republican politician threatening our core freedoms—by electing Judge Susan Crawford.
“We know how to win this next fight—and every fight to follow—because we’ve done it before. We defeated Donald Trump and Republicans when he attempted to overturn the Affordable Care Act and strip health care from millions of Americans. We defeated Scott Walker and restored dignity for working people across our state. And we beat Daniel Kelly in a landslide, restoring respect for our Constitution to our state’s highest court and casting off an extreme partisan gerrymander that had held progress back for more than a decade. Tim Michels, Eric Hovde, and Brad Schimel all know what happens when Wisconsin Democrats unite and fight for our values. The future of freedom in Wisconsin will be decided in just over 70 days, and as Wisconsin Democrats, there’s just one direction to go: Forward.”
