MILWAUKEE – Leaders and residents in Bay View are celebrating the start of construction on the new playground at South Shore Park, which began on Monday, June 9th.

The South Shore Park playground was installed in 1996 and is one of the oldest playgrounds in the Milwaukee County Parks system. Funding was approved in the 2022 budget for the replacement of the playground. The new playground system will include ADA-accessible features and surfacing will be upgraded to a “poured-in-place” surfacing (soft, rubberized surface).

The new playground will include a play structure for 2- to 5-year-old kids with a Farmers Market theme, a play structure for 5- to 12-year-old kids with a ship theme, swings, and some stand-alone play pieces.

Weather permitting, construction is expected to be completed in June. A new beach is also currently under construction at South Shore Park, and is expected to be completed in early July.

Supervisor Jack Eckblad championed the partnerships that made this possible, “South Shore Park is a vibrant center of culture and recreation for Milwaukee County, and the new beach and playground will ensure it remains that way for generations to come. I want to also applaud the generation of effort from local leaders, and the partnership with neighborhood partners like Friends of South Shore Park that have made all this possible.”

“I am deeply grateful for the community support that made this happen,” Representative Clancy stated, “It was clear that the neighborhood – and Milwaukee County – loved and used the last playground. The money raised by Fund Play Bay View, and testimony from the public, helped us get the traction on the County Board to invest in a new, improved space by diverting budget funds away from punitive infrastructure and towards positive public space.”

Alderwoman Marina Dimitrijevic said, “South Shore Park and Beach have claimed a unique space in Milwaukee’s amenities. Once overlooked as a main waterfront attraction, we are now a welcoming, busy space open to all. This county investment matched with neighborhood funds will serve generations to come and is a wonderful addition to our neighborhood.”

Milwaukee County Parks will continue to provide updates for the South Shore Park Playground and Beach on their respective projects pages on the Milwaukee County Parks website.
