Greendale, WI: This month students from Greendale High School were notified they won the Congressional App Challenge for Wisconsin’s 1st Congressional District for the second consecutive year. Students were surprised at school by WI Representative Bryan Steil who presented their award in person. Steil noted “It’s an honor to recognize students for their accomplishments and highlight the good things our kids are doing today.”

Winning apps will be displayed in congress for the following year and winning students are invited to present their work at the House of Code conference in Washington DC in April.

The students: Evie Skibicki, Cole Bucek, Ava Scheuer, and Ari Scheuer, all Greendale High School Seniors, won the award by developing an app, Playground Quest, that would motivate kids to get active in the parks around their community. Evie Skibicki explained “we learned that a lot of kids don’t get enough time playing and exercising outdoors, and wanted to do something to change that. We’re excited to be making a difference in our community.”

The Representative’s office did not share the news with the students previously, and students were unaware of why they were being called out of class. Evie Skibicki said “I was a little scared, I didn’t think I had done anything to get in trouble!” But once they learned about their award, there were smiles all around.

Two of the students, Evie Skibicki, and Cole Bucek, had been on the previous year’s winning team which had created the app “Brain Food: The NutriQuiz” which helped kids learn about proper nutrition.

Two additional Greendale High School Students, Ansh Paranjiya, and Oliver Bucek, also submitted a winning app in the challenge, “Smoke Free Generation,” in Rep. Gwen Moore’s District 04.

All the students are members of community robotics teams operating from Milwaukee School of Engineering supported by Greendale Robotics, Inc.
