Resolution requiring MPD members to issue business cards to be before the Council
At tomorrow’s (July 28) Common Council meeting, Alderwoman Chantia Lewis is introducing for immediate adoption Council legislation urging the Fire and Police Commission to require members of the Milwaukee Police Department to provide business cards when encountering an individual or groups of individuals during the course of their official duties.
“In an attempt to help foster an atmosphere of trust and cooperation, I am introducing this resolution to promote transparency and accountability from the police,” Alderwoman Lewis said. “There is a greater need for police oversight and accountability in light of the global, racial-justice protest movement that has risen in response to the deaths of Dontre Hamilton, Sylville Smith, Joel Acevedo, George Floyd, Eric Garner, Michael Brown and other unarmed Black (and brown) men, and taking away police anonymity will be a positive advancement in protecting Americans and their constitutional rights.”
The file will be before the full Common Council at its regularly scheduled meeting tomorrow- Tuesday, July 28 at 9 a.m. The virtual meeting will be televised live on the City Channel (channel 25 on Spectrum Cable and channel 99 on AT&T U-Verse in the City of Milwaukee) and via streaming video on the city website at city.milwaukee.gov/Channel25.
