MADISON – Today, May 24, 2016, Wisconsin State Representative Mandela Barnes (D – Milwaukee) is attending a Gun Violence Prevention Convening at the invitation of the White House. The purpose of the convening is to bring together state and local elected officials who have been leaders in the fight to save lives from gun violence and to engage with senior Administration officials regarding steps they are taking to address gun violence in their communities.

Rep. Barnes released the following statement regarding the convening:

“It is an honor to accept the White House’s invitation to discuss how we can make our communities as safe and secure as possible from gun violence. Just like the President, I am committed to keeping guns out of the wrong hands and making our communities safer from the tragic and preventable epidemic of gun violence.

“In Milwaukee, innocent lives continue to be lost to violent shootings at a shockingly record pace, and elected officials across our state and our nation continue to turn a blind eye to this heartbreaking problem. While it’s clear that Republicans in Congress and here in Wisconsin have no intention of standing up to special interests who want to maintain the status quo, I will continue to fight for real and immediate action to prevent unnecessary and menacing gun violence from causing any more devastation across Wisconsin and our nation.

“I look forward to a productive discussion with fellow leaders across our nation about how to address the senseless epidemic of gun violence within our communities.”

Vice President Joe Biden will be providing livestreamed remarks at the convening at 2:15pm CT, and they can be viewed at https://www.whitehouse.gov/live/white-house-convening-gun-violence-prevention-state-and-local-officials.
