Council Approves Zoning Change for Metcalfe Park Liberation Hub
Alderman Russell W. Stamper, II said the Common Council’s action today (Tuesday, September 22) to approve a key zoning change paves the way for a transformational community-led project in the 15th Aldermanic District.
The Metcalfe Park Liberation Hub project is set to transform a long-vacant building at N. 38th and W. Clarke into a community-owned anchor. The Council file for the change in zoning (CCFN #260294) – sponsored by Alderman Stamper – was requested by Metcalfe Park Community Bridges, Inc. and will allow the site to be utilized with neighborhood-serving uses, including a community center with meeting spaces, a neighborhood bookstore and café, a food distribution center, and a laundry facility.
A future expansion includes plans for a full commercial kitchen, offices (including a dedicated office for Metcalfe Park Community Bridges, Inc.), on-site residential apartments, a central courtyard, a rooftop seating area, and a small parking lot.
Alderman Stamper thanked his Council colleagues for their support for the project, and applauded MPCB for its drive to help bring the project to fruition.
“The dedicated work on this project by the community, and specifically by Metcalfe Park Community Bridges, has been spectacular,” Alderman Stamper said. “I want to thank everyone who has lent their energy, focus, and heart for the Hub, and I can’t wait to see it take root in a spot that has long been vacant and unproductive.
