At least Baldwin “faked” outrage. All this lady fakes is being qualified.
A note on what is now a big favorite of the Republican far-right, friend of the little people/real Americans, scam, i.e.,”the coastal elite,” the liberals who have contempt for “middle America/flyover country.” The favorite now employed by the nurse, military soccer mom Ms. Vukmir in her press release
(first my non-elitist credentials: child of low-income immigrant parents, seven in a 1 bedroom cold water flat on the south side of Milwaukee, 1st to graduate high school, etc., etc.)
The East Coast/New York elite that Ms. Vukmir claims to scorn actually does exist. But it is not her “liberal elite” that has contempt for “ordinary” Americans. That one does not exist. Most liberal New Yorkers share the belief that “ordinary” Americans are pretty much the same everywhere, that they have the same struggles, and that they all deserve to be treated with the same respect.
In reality, the real elite, those who have contempt for the “little people” in “flyover” country, are the Trumps of the world, especially in New York City. There, the mostly Republican Wall Street elite, Fox News, and a range of wealthy big shots, (some of whom are Democrats), all view people in places like Wisconsin – as well as those “little people” in their hometown – with contempt. That is especially true if these people don’t make much money, or in the worst case are poor or dependent. Like Trump and his cabinet, they view “ordinary” people as an undifferentiated mass, as marks, “the help,” the kind of losers they would be forced to see if, God help you, you had to fly commercial.
To them, the Vukmirs of the world are useful idiots, the kind of pliable tool who is capable of, and willing to, say anything, and who will also go along with The Program if, by some horrible accident, she were to be elected to the Senate. There she could be the new Joni Ernst or the female version of Glen Grothmann. The heart of The Program is to make sure that the real elite has to pay little or no tax, that their businesses are unregulated and unexamined, that the social safety net is shredded or privatized, that the future of the country is irrelevant, and that the search for scapegoats keeps up so that nobody focuses on the fact that the United States has become a corporate plutocracy that is screwing those “little people.” That is the real “Eastern elite,” rather than the nonexistent one of the Vukmir campaign, the Republican imagination and its propaganda machine.
