Ordinance offering improved overnight parking permit system moves forward
The Common Council’s Public Safety and Health Committee today (Thursday, February 16) recommended approval of file #221544 – an ordinance relating to overnight parking permits. Authored by Alderman Jonathan Brostoff, the ordinance change adds monthly, weekly, and daily parking permits to the existing annual and 4-month permits, in addition to establishing a fixed price for each defined duration of parking permit.
Currently, those seeking a parking permit only have the option to purchase either an annual or 4-month permit, and after purchase the permit is only applicable for the remainder of the trimester or annual permit period instead of a full 4 months or full year from the date of purchase. The new monthly, weekly, and daily permits would be available for prices of $10, $5 and $1 respectively, in addition to the 4-month and annual permits that would remain as options for purchase. The new rolling permits would be available by the end of the current trimester of 2023, ending April 30.Additionally, the ordinance would create push notifications to proactively alert users when permits are up for renewal.
Alderman Brostoff believes this ordinance would be beneficial for both the end customer and the City. “Allowing more parking permit purchase options and having them effective immediately through the time period purchased is much needed and a substantial value added, friendlier proposition for residents,” he said. “In addition to this enhanced experience for the end user, the potential is there to lessen the burden on the city’s call center staff who take tens of thousands of calls annually for temporary parking permissions. I’m incredibly excited about this win-win proposition.”
The file will be before the full Common Council at its next regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, February 28.
