November at Lynden

By - Nov 7th, 2022 10:40 am

We are closed on Thanksgiving Day, November 24. But then again, we’re always closed Thursday.

It looks like November today: the skeletons of the bare trees standing out against a grey sky. When I arrived this morning, the swish and crackle produced by the leaves underfoot was replaced by a damp silence. Things have changed since then, several times. A deer went bounding past my window, looking as if something was in hot pursuit. For a couple of hours, the wind rapidly increased the proportion of bare trees in my line of sight and dried the leaves which began to eddy across the lawn. Now the rain is splashing against my windows, the power is flickering, and strong gusts are bending trees and raising clouds of leaves that obscure the view. All this in stark contrast to our balmy week. Late fall field trips are often shivery affairs, but several recent K-12 groups have reveled in the reprieve from winter.

Preparations are underway for the arrival of the Nohl Fellowship jurors in Milwaukee. This is the first time we’ve been able to have the jurors in town since 2019, and they will spend two days doing studio visits with the twelve finalists, six in the Established category and six in the Emerging. We are delighted to announce that the juroors will be giving a public talk about their institutions and curatorial interests on Thursday, November 17, at Walker’s Point Center for the Arts (more info below). The event is free but pre-registration is required. At the far end of the month, 2022 Nohl Fellow Molly Hassler talks about her work on the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Artists Now Lecture series. This is a free, virtual event.

Chuck Stebelton will lead his monthly bird walk on November 13 and we offer our annual post-prandial dog day on Thanksgiving weekend. Tuesdays in the Garden has switched to its cold weather schedule, meaning it meets twice a month. This month’s virtual Multilingual Story Time features Claudia Orjuela reading Vejigante Masquerader, written and illustrated by Lulu Delacre, and following up with a hands-on art activity. These story times are virtual and can be accessed at any time after we first stream them.

Our HOME programs are maintaining their focus on Ukraine this month. The HOME Book Discussion Group continues with Sonya Bilocerkowycz’s On Our Way Home from the Revolution: Reflections on Ukraine, and we host our second Ukraine-focused panel in the Conversations on Forced Displacement series. This time Halyna Salapata of Wisconsin Ukrainians Inc. and Karina Tweedell of Ukrainian Milwaukee will offer advice about how best to assist refugees coming into our area.

Finally, and happily, we are extending HEALING COATS, our current exhibition. We’ve added two new coats to the gallery, so circle back even if you have seen it once.

November events, arranged chronologically:

For the safety of all concerned, we ask you to be respectful of others at all times. Masks are required in the gallery. You must still register in advance for any of our programs that require registration. Please note that some of our programs, like classes for children, may operate under more stringent guidelines. We continue to monitor public health advice and will adjust policies as needed.

Tuesdays, November 1, 15 2022- 10:30 am-11:30 am
TUESDAYS IN THE GARDEN FOR PARENTS & VERY SMALL CHILDREN

Join art educators Claudia Orjuela and Denice Niebuhr for hands-on art making and all-senses-engaged exploration of the outdoor world at Lynden. Tuesdays in the Garden, designed for children aged 1-3, provides a nurturing environment where children’s curiosity and wonder are extended through play and exploration, and children and their caregivers learn and discover side-by-side. We’ll consider different themes, each designed to connect Lynden’s environment with children’s interests. We will encourage experimentation and the manipulation of art and natural materials to tell stories, solve problems, and develop relationships. The themes for November are Hidden Workers and Cozy Shelters.

HOME: CONVERSATIONS ON FORCED DISPLACEMENT
UKRAINE: ORIGINS OF CONFLICT AND ITS CONTINUATION

Conflict in Ukraine has been intrinsically tied to the identity and history of its people and the region, shaped by geopolitics and relations to neighboring Russia. About 8 million internally displaced Ukrainians and 7 million Ukrainian refugees have been affected by the Russo-Ukrainian War which began in 2014 and has now extended for over eight years. These conversations on Ukraine will discuss the root, the complexity, and the continuation of the country’s crisis through the lens of Ukrainian scholars, artists and activists. In October, we presented a panel discussion (recorded), and in November, we guide participants in an action-based discussion with a focus on impacting change in Milwaukee, both led by moderator Paul Vang. November panelists include Karina Tweedell from Ukrainian Milwaukee and Halyna Salapata from Wisconsin Ukrainians Inc.

Sunday, November 13, 2022 – 8:30-10 am
BIRDING WITH CHUCK STEBELTON

Join poet and birder Chuck Stebelton the second Sunday of each month for a small-group, socially distanced bird walk on the grounds. Keeping to the perimeter of the garden, we’ll watch for seasonal migrants and resident bird species and seek out the best bird habitats to identify as many species as we can. Please dress for the weather and plan to walk in varied terrain. Bring your binoculars if you have them; no previous birding experience required.

Wednesday, November 16, 2022– 10:30-11 am VIRTUAL
HOME: MULTILINGUAL STORY TIME

HOME Multilingual Story Time features children’s books written or illustrated by authors, illustrators, and artists who have faced forced displacement as refugees, asylum seekers, or immigrants, and come from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences. Designed for children aged 4-8, we believe that reading picture books is a way to share and discuss big ideas with young children. We end each virtual session with an art activity from Lynden art educator Claudia Orjuela. Follow-up activities will be available for download. The book for November is Vejigante Masquerader, written and illustrated by Lulu Delacre, and read in Spanish and English by Claudia Orjuela. Scheduled to screen every third Wednesday of the month, HOME Story Time is a collaboration with the Milwaukee Public Library, the Islamic Resource Center, Hanan Refugee Relief Group, Alliance Française de Milwaukee, and Milwaukee African Women’s Association. Videos remain on view once they are posted.

VIRTUAL
HOME BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP

The Lynden/HOME Refugee Steering Committee book discussion group, moderated by Lynden’s Kim Khaira, is for those interested in firsthand accounts of displacement. We consider works of non-fiction and fiction, including autobiographical and semi-autobiographical works, by writers who have faced or are facing forced displacement as refugees, asylum seekers, and immigrants. Where stories of persecution, historical trauma, and loss of livelihood are effortlessly conveyed by storytellers, journalists, and humanitarians who search out or stumble upon the lives of refugees, we seek out the words of those to whom these stories belong: the narrators who are the closest to their own stories, and the stories of their people, friends, family and, of course, refugees. In November, we continue with Sonya Bilocerkowycz’s On Our Way Home from the Revolution: Reflections on Ukraine. Newcomers welcome!
