No. 9/9 #MUBB Rallies For 78-69 Win At Butler
The No. 9/9 Marquette University men’s basketball team (18-3, 9-1 BIG EAST) continued BIG EAST play Tuesday night with a 78-69 victory at Butler (9-12, 2-8 BIG EAST) at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
Senior guard Stevie Mitchell led the way with a career-high 22 points and Kam Jones chipped in 17 points, despite being limited by foul trouble.
Marquette was down 42-35 at the intermission, but quickly scored six points to pull within a point and would eventually lead by as many as 11 points and grabbed the lead for good with Jones on the bench. Seven different players scored for the Golden Eagles, including some key baskets in the second half by sophomores Tre Norman and Zaide Lowery.
Marquette trailed 42-35 at the intermission after the Bulldogs shot 57.1 percent from the floor and 5-of-10 from behind the 3-point line. MU jumped out 7-2 in the opening minutes, but an 11-0 run gave Butler the lead and it would grow to as many as 10 points prior to intermission.
Notables:
- Guard Kam Jones finished with 17 points to move into fourth place (1,787) on the all-time scoring list, passing George Thompson (1,773), who was the program’s all-time leading scorer for 40 years.
- In two games against Butler, MU combined to commit just xx total turnovers
- Stevie Mitchell has back-to-back 20-point games for the first time in his career
