MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee Teachers’ Education Association (MTEA) announced today that its Representative Assembly voted to endorse the Power to the People campaign to replace We Energies with a municipal or cooperative utility. The MTEA is the union representing nearly 5,500 public education workers in Milwaukee Public Schools.

“It’s time our city put people power over corporate greed,” said MTEA President Amy Mizialko. “The families of Milwaukee Public Schools are negatively affected by the exploitation of our city by We Energies. Our students, our members and the people of Milwaukee deserve a utility that puts people and service over profit.”

The Power to the People campaign, led by the Milwaukee Democratic Socialists of America, is a campaign calling on city leaders to start the legal process outlined in Chapter 197 of the Wisconsin State Statutes to replace We Energies with a publicly owned electrical utility.

The MTEA joins a growing list of Milwaukee organizations that have signed on to the campaign, including Our Wisconsin Revolution, Citizen Action of Wisconsin, North Side Rising, the Greater Milwaukee Green Party, Milwaukee Solidarity, Milwaukee DSA and others. Milwaukee residents who support the vision for public power can sign a petition here calling on their local elected officials to support the campaign.

“Milwaukee students and families can thrive if we have a city government that supports their needs, makes them safe, and provides them with reliable, affordable electricity among other things,” said MTEA Vice President Ingrid Walker Henry. “Public power in Milwaukee can be a part of that.”
