Modern Storage Facility Opens Downtown
Life Storage, Inc. rehabs former Boston Store warehouse
Marking the latest transformation of a former industrial space in downtown Milwaukee, Life Storage, Inc. announced today the opening of a state-of-the-art self storage facility at 420 W. St. Paul Ave.
Built in the early 1920s, the 114,000 square foot building originally served as a warehouse for Milwaukee’s iconic Boston Store before transitioning to a records storage warehouse in the nineties and, most recently, for enterprise information management services company Iron Mountain.
To maintain the charm of historic buildings in downtown Milwaukee, Brian Fisher and the New Berlin-based Anderson Ashton team carefully restored the original hardwood floors – a difficult task due to the thousands of indentions left by the footing of Iron Mountain’s 30,000 lbs. of document storage shelving.
In an effort to dramatically reduce the building’s energy footprint, the restoration process included the installation of more than 500 LED light fixtures, 21 new HVAC units and the insulation and closure of over 100 exterior perforations.
“Restoring a century-old building of this size comes with its fair share of challenges,” said business development manager at Anderson Ashton, Brian Fisher. “Creating a modern storage facility while staying true to the aesthetics synonymous with the Historic Third Ward was a struggle, but well worth it in the end.”
The seven-story, modern self storage facility houses more than 1,000 climate controlled storage units, including over 250 smaller sized lockers purpose built to serve the students of neighboring colleges. Convenient access is available on Fifth Street and the facility features a ground level interior loading area for customer vehicles.
The building features energy efficient systems, Wi-Fi access, surveillance and electronic access security systems, 24-hour key pad access, and two new elevators.
“We are excited to be part of the transformation of Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward,” said Life Storage area manager for Milwaukee, Richard Green. “We are so proud of this facility. It offers all the amenities of a state-of-the-art storage facility, and also retains the character of the downtown Milwaukee community.”
The new facility is part of Life Storage’s continued expansion into the Milwaukee area, as this addition marks the city’s second facility.
