Milwaukee DSA Opposes County Move To Weaken Successful Right-To-Counsel Program

By - Oct 22nd, 2024 11:48 am

The Milwaukee Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) oppose the recent move to quietly cut Eviction Free MKE program funding from County Executive David Crowley’s proposed 2025 Milwaukee County Budget.

Since its launch in 2021, this service has proved vital for some of our community’s most vulnerable residents, people facing eviction and unable to afford a lawyer.

“Milwaukee DSA has proudly supported Eviction Free MKE and its work since its inception,” said Milwaukee DSA Communications Officer Greg Brown. “Its loss would only reinforce a brutal status quo that treats our most vulnerable residents as second-class citizens whose inability to pay gives better-off landlords the green light to exploit them further.”

A report last year found this program was a success for vulnerable residents, with a dramatic rise in tenant representation and tenants achieving their goals in the majority of cases.

“People facing eviction, like everyone here in Milwaukee, deserve a chance at legal recourse,” said Co-Chair Pamela Westphal. “In a county where almost 60% of households are renters, legal protections like Right to Counsel must be implemented to protect the working class.”

Milwaukee DSA encourages community members to voice their support for Eviction Free MKE by attending a public testimony online or in person at the Zoofari Center (9715 W Bluemound Rd.) on Monday, Oct. 28th at 6:30 p.m.

Milwaukee DSA is Milwaukee’s largest socialist organization fighting for a democratic economy, a just society, and a sustainable environment.
