Golden Eagles Shine on Alumni Night, Defeat Eastern Illinois 3-1

Christianson scores twice as Marquette closes the nonconference slate with a victory at Valley Fields

MILWAUKEE — The Marquette University women’s soccer team (4-1-4, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) scored three goals in the second half to defeat Eastern Illinois (2-4-3, 0-0-0 OVC), 3-1, at Valley Fields on Alumni Night.

After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, the Golden Eagles wasted little time finding the breakthrough in the second half.

Haley Christianson put Marquette on the board just 1:51 into the second half, scoring off assists from Callie Hefner and Kaylie Sheehan to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead at the 46:51 mark.

Eastern Illinois answered just over three minutes later in the 50th minute to level the match at 1-1.

Marquette continued to apply pressure, eventually regaining the lead in the 82nd minute.

Emily Fix found the back of the net at 81:23, converting a chance set up by Sheehan and Kiley McMinn to put the Golden Eagles ahead, 2-1.

Just over two minutes later, Christianson added her second goal of the night. Ava Jack Shaw provided the assist on the 83:48 goal as Marquette extended its lead to 3-1.

NOTABLES:

  • Christianson scored twice, marking the first multi-goal game of her career.
  • Fix recorded her first goal of the season, and the eighth of her career.
  • Sheehan recorded two assists, while Hefner, Shaw and McMinn each added one.
  • Marquette finished with a 27-7 advantage in shots and a 10-3 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Golden Eagles held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Mia Hurd made two saves in the victory.
  • Eleanor Kane recorded the first start of her Golden Eagle career.

Marquette has concluded the nonconference portion of the season. The Golden Eagles will be back in action Saturday, Sept. 26, when they travel to Butler to open BIG EAST play.
