Lime Returns to Milwaukee with Industry Leading Gen4 E-Scooters and Focus on Safe, Responsible Riding
Since Lime first launched in Milwaukee over 140,000 riders have taken over 565,000 trips on Lime vehicles
Lime returned to Milwaukee this week launching 100 of its industry leading Gen4 e-scooters with plans to scale up to 600 this week. Lime, the global leader in shared electric vehicles, plans to build on its previous success in Milwaukee and add new technological and educational solutions to curb sidewalk riding and improper parking. Lime shares the City’s Vision 2050 objectives of building a 21st-century transportation system that provides all residents and visitors with access to safe, affordable, and sustainable options to get around in ways that serve as many people and create as much economic activity as possible. Lime worked with the City and with its numerous community partners to build a bespoke plan of operations designed to serve Milwaukee’s unique needs and goals in terms of sustainability, equity, safety, and economic activity.
“Lime is proud to return to Milwaukee for the third year in a row to provide residents and visitors a safe, affordable, and sustainable way to experience the city. We know what it takes to run a successful e-scooter sharing program here and we are excited to implement our plan focused on equity and safety, especially with regard to preventing sidewalk riding and improper parking. We look forward to the best year yet of serving Milwaukee with our safe, sustainable, and affordable shared electric vehicles,” said LeAaron Foley, Director of Government and Community Relations at Lime.
Since Lime first launched in Milwaukee over 140,000 riders have taken over 565,000 trips on Lime vehicles, traveling nearly 700,000 miles. By riding Lime shared electric scooters, those riders saved an estimated 60 metric tons of carbon emissions by keeping an estimated 140,000 car trips off the road, which also saved over 6,700 gallons of gas.
Hardware
The Gen4 e-scooter will provide riders with the smoothest and most environmentally friendly shared scooter ride available. The new Gen4 also improves rider and pedestrian safety and has a new two-sided kickstand to prevent tipping over and thus preventing clutter. Lime e-scooters in Chicago will also be equipped with lock-to technology that will keep sidewalks clear for pedestrians.
The goal of the Gen4 scooter is to provide the smoothest and most sustainable Lime scooter ride in our history. Highlights of the new vehicle model include:
- Swept back handlebars, a first for shared e-scooters and reminiscent of bike handles, allowing for more a comfortable grip.
- Dual hand brake system to make slowing and stopping easier and more immediate when needed.
- Lowered baseboard to optimize the center of gravity on the scooter and make getting on and off easier.
- New kickstand with two legs to help avoid scooters from being tipped over when parked, which can help to reduce clutter on sidewalks.
- Enhanced suspension and larger wheels mean a smoother ride over cracks, warped pavement and anything else the cityscape can throw at you.
Most important of all is the addition of a swappable battery, which will drive even greater efficiency in our operations and further reduce the carbon emissions of scooter riding.
Safety
Lime understands that safety and responsible usage, especially sidewalk riding prevention, are key components of any successful shared scooter program in Milwaukee. Lime will actively educate its riders on the prohibition of sidewalk riding throughout the 2022 program, via in-app messaging, in person events, and marketing and communications efforts. In addition, Lime will engage its riders regarding the rules of the road in Milwaukee to prevent riding on the Riverwalk and to ensure the safety of non-riders as well as riders. Riders and non-riders can use any of our customer service channels to report safety and maintenance issues, improperly parked vehicles, or general inquiries pertaining to refunds, market operations, city launches, promotions, etc. The channels are staffed 24/7 by a multilingual team. Our app has additional automated features to enable immediate reporting, including a Rapid Reporting button on the home screen and a prompt at the end of each ride for the rider to rate their trip and report any issues.
Equity
Lime believes equity to be at the core of its mission because equitable access to reliable transportation is key to thriving cities and communities. To support that mission, Lime will bring its successful Lime Access program back to Milwaukee, providing a 70%-plus discount to any residents receiving local, state, or federal support, like Wisconsin Foodshare, Medicare, SSI, Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee residents and MCTS Reduced Fare cardholders. Lime is also focused on geographically equitable service, something Milwaukee has highlighted as important to its e-scooter sharing program. Lime will be providing automatic 50% discounts for all trips starting in the city’s designated Zones 3, 4, and 5 in addition to Lime Access.
