Housing Trust Fund allocation provides support for Riverwest apartments, food center

Yesterday (Tuesday, December 13), the Common Council adopted a substitute resolution relating to the allocation of funds from the Housing Trust Fund. Included in the funding packet is $1 million to support a Riverwest food accelerator and affordable housing development. The project plans to include 91 apartment units with many serving as affordable housing, along with a commercial-grade kitchen to support the launch of new food businesses. The kitchen space will also host food-oriented activities and educational programming.

3rd District Alderman Jonathan Brostoff believes this project will continue the momentum of redevelopment along E. North Ave. “The Housing Trust Fund allocations will make a long-lasting impact across Milwaukee, and this project in particular will not only provide affordable housing in my district, but also support local entrepreneurs and address inequalities that exist around food access and education,” he said. “The Housing Trust Fund Advisory Board reviewed dozens of worthy applications for this significant investment, and I’d like to thank them for their dedication and for supporting this transformative development in Riverwest.”

The affordable housing development and food accelerator is slated for a vacant site west of the Milwaukee River on E. North Ave. A total of 77 apartments would be set at below-market rates, and 19 of the 77 affordable units would be set aside for those with permanent developmental, physical, sensory, medical, or mental health disabilities.
