Construction has begun on the Good Hope Road Library at 7717 W. Good Hope Road. An agreement was finalized Thursday between the developer and the City of Milwaukee to start work on the project, according to Alderwoman Chantia Lewis.

The existing building will soon be razed to begin building the new, mixed-use facility that will include:

  • 65 mixed income 1, 2, and 3 bedroom apartment units
  • Separate parking for apartment residents
  • Green space

The new development will also comprise a larger state of the art 17,500 square foot library space similar to other new Milwaukee Public Library facilities including:

  • Flexible, open spaces
  • An expanded and more flexible community room
  • Greater access to computers and technology

“It’s been a pleasure to see this project progress,” said Ald. Lewis. “This mixed-use facility with a state of the art library will be a wonderful resource and addition to the new 9th!”

The Good Hope Library will replace Mill Road Library, located at 6431 N. 76th St. During construction, the Mill Road Library will remain open. More information can be found at http://www.mpl.org/hours_locations/mill_road.php.

The $15 million dollar Good Hope Road project is being developed by Royal Capital LLC and Maures Development Group. Construction is anticipated to be completed in winter of 2019 at which time the Mill Road Library will permanently close.

Looks a lot like East Library, which is not a bad thing. I like the layout. However, there wasn’t a mixed income apartment option for the East branch, which is a shame since there are many people who would and could benefit from it. Just because it was the East side does not mean everyone can afford everything.

Best Wishes for Good Hope and those who will move in upstairs.
