Golf Wins Sixth BIG EAST Team Championship
OKATIE, South Carolina – The Marquette University men’s golf team claimed its sixth BIG EAST Conference team championship on Monday at Callawassie Island and is headed back to the NCAA tournament.
The Golden Eagles shot a 6-under 282 on Monday to finish the event with a 17-under 847, which is 11 strokes better than tournament runner-up Xavier (6-under). All five Marquette student-athletes finished in the top 13 of the overall standings, led by Patrick Adler and Johan Widal in a tie for fourth.
Adler, who entered the tournament as the league’s top-ranked player in the Scoreboard NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Rankings, carded eight birdies on Monday to tie with UConn’s Alex Heard for the individual lead in the category during the week with 16. Heard won individual medalist honors with an 11-under 205 and earn an individual spot in NCAA Regional competition.
Lyons rallied from a difficult opening round for Sunday’s second-best individual score, a 5-under 67, before his 70 on Monday. The 2023-24 BIG EAST Player of the Year’s seventh-place individual finish at the event is a personal best.
The tournament at Callawassie Island uses the Magnolia Course as the front nine and the Dogwood course for the back nine. This is the seventh year the club has hosted the tournament and MU has now won four conference championships at the venue (2015, 2017, 2019, 2025).
The NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Selection Show airs live at noon Central time on Wednesday, April 30 on Golf Channel. The six sites slated to host NCAA Regional play are Amherst, Virginia (Liberty), Auburn, Bremerton (Washington), Reno (Nevada), Tallahassee (Florida State), Urbana (Illinois).
