Golf Finishes as Runner-Up at “Pay it Forward” Collegiate
Max Lyons finished second overall with an 8-under 208
LITCHFIELD PARK, Arizona – The Marquette University men’s golf team finished second and senior Max Lyons was runner up with an 8-under-par 208 in the Bell Bank “Pay it Forward” Collegiate at Wigwam Golf Club’s Gold Course.
The Golden Eagles led the 16-team field by 15 strokes on Monday evening after posting a 16-under 272 in the first round and an 7-under 281 in the second. Iowa State stormed back in Tuesday’s third round with a 20-under 268 to overtake MU by two strokes.
Sophomore Ryan Banas posted an unblemished first round on Monday morning with seven birdies to help the Golden Eagles out to an early lead. Johan Widal sat just one stroke behind Banas with a 6-under 66 in the opening round and the pair were tied for first entering Tuesday’s final 18 holes.
Sophomore Mason Schmidtke, playing as an individual, fired MU’s best round of the final day, a bogey-free 5-under 67.
