Food pantries and other options for those navigating food challenges

Members of the Common Council say that despite a federal judge’s ruling this afternoon directing President Trump to continue the FoodShare program and SNAP benefits, residents should always plan ahead and not hesitate to secure nutritious food from food pantries when they need to do so.

The ruling by the federal judge in Rhode Island continues the FoodShare program and SNAP benefits, which were set to be shut down for a lack of funding starting tomorrow (Saturday, November 1) because of the federal government shutdown.

Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs, Alderman Mark Chambers, Jr., and Alderwoman Andrea M. Pratt said they are pleased by the ruling keeping funding in place for the FoodShare program and SNAP.

“We are thankful for the judge’s ruling and relieved. This has all happened very quickly and by no fault of citizens, families and innocent children across Milwaukee who were facing the very real possibility of hunger and suffering,” the Council members said. “We know how frustrating this can be, and we are hopeful that Congress will get the shutdown ended as soon as possible. But our residents do NOT need to go hungry in Milwaukee and we strongly urge them to utilize the resources included in this release.”

The resources listed below offer donated, nutritious food options for those in need.

To find out more about obtaining food, please go to the websites of the Hunger Task Force Milwaukee County (https://www.hungertaskforce.org/get-help/emergency-food/) and Feeding America (statewide) (https://feedingamericawi.org/find-a-pantry/).

The Milwaukee County Department of Health and Human Services posted an expansive list of resources on its Facebook page here that is also very helpful.
