File introduced seeking ability to regulate or prohibit for-profit institutions of higher learning

Alderman Mark Chambers, Jr., Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs and Alderwoman Andrea M. Pratt have introduced legislation that would amend the City of Milwaukee’s legislative package to seek introduction and passage of state legislation authorizing Cities of the First Class to regulate or prohibit for-profit institutions of higher learning. The intent of the legislation would be to allow Milwaukee increased regulation of for-profit colleges to ensure accurate representation, as well as general accountability and transparency. The file will be before the Council’s Judiciary and Legislation Committee on Monday, September 16.

“Milwaukee has a murky history with for-profit colleges that produce alluring ads with promises of high-paying jobs, but often just leave their students with worse outcomes on earnings, debt and default,” said the Council members. “We believe a change in state statutes is in order to allow the city greater control of these institutions that prey on disadvantaged communities. There should be oversight and accountability to better protect our residents.”

The Judiciary and Legislation Committee meeting will begin at 9 a.m. on September 16,  and will be streamed live on the City Channel (channel 25 on Spectrum Cable and channel 99 on AT&T U-Verse in the City of Milwaukee) and via streaming video on the city website at city.milwaukee.gov/Channel25.
