District 12 welcomes Natural Resource Technology to the Freshwater Hub

Statement of Alderman José G. Pérez March 6, 2013

I am happy to welcome Natural Resource Technology to Milwaukee’s Freshwater Hub, the up-and-coming water efficiency cluster and global hub for freshwater research located in the Walker’s Point neighborhood. NRT is staffing its new headquarters with 50 employees who previously worked out of offices in Pewaukee, and I’m pleased that these professionals will be contributing their intelligence and creativity to the area’s growing vibrancy when their relocation is completed in June.

NRT is just the latest company to take an interest in the burgeoning “blue economy” in the heart of the city. The central location enables easy collaboration with freshwater resources in the area like the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s School of Freshwater Sciences and the Water Council, as well as quick access to a lively entertainment and dining scene.

It’s very rewarding to see the city’s investment in this area paying dividends. The City of Milwaukee anticipates investing between $5 million and $6 million in the vacant 17-acre parcel along S. 6th St. known as the Reed Street Yards, and has worked to facilitate other business incubators and companies looking to invest in Walker’s Point. Day by day, we’re seeing the Water Council’s vision of a synergistic hub for freshwater technology
taking shape, and it’s truly exciting.
