Construction on West Capitol Drive to begin July 9

News release from Alderman Khalif J. Rainey

By - Jun 25th, 2018 04:57 pm

Alderman Khalif J. Rainey would like to make residents and commuters aware of a new construction project called the West Capitol Drive Project. The city will begin construction efforts on the project on July 9 to rebuild the medians on West Capitol Drive between the Soo Line Overpass to North 36th Street.

Construction is permitted to take place between 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and citizens are encouraged to allow for extra time when traveling through the construction zone. Two lanes of traffic in each direction will be maintained during the project and pedestrian access to properties and businesses will also be maintained with the least amount of inconvenience. The project is expected to finish in October 2018; however, all work is dependent on weather and is subject to change.

There are a number of benefits of the project that will positively impact residents and local businesses. This includes the installation of new pedestrian curb ramps, new pedestrian refuge islands in the median and new pavement markings for turn lanes.

“In our community, safety will always be our number one priority and the improved roadway will be a great addition to the 7th District,” said Alderman Rainey.

Alderman Rainey views the West Capitol Drive Project as an opportunity to enhance safety for pedestrians and motorists as well as increase the overall efficiency of the operation of the roadway.

Street parking will be temporarily removed during construction and the Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) will continue bus routes #6, 35, 61 and the RedLine as scheduled.
