I am very concerned about safety and health violations that have been brought to light related to the ongoing Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) demolition project of certain properties along the Kinnickinnic River.

Thanks to a concerned resident, we have learned that contractors had been removing materials containing asbestos from homes in a manner not in accordance with city code and environmental regulations.

I have been in contact with MMSD and with city Department of Neighborhood Services officials, and I have made it crystal clear that all contractors MUST follow asbestos removal procedures and best practices to the letter, and that all permits and jobs that have been a part of this project are to be carefully reviewed. I will be closely monitoring the project to make sure that this sort of thing does not re-occur.

I want to sincerely thank resident Sylvia Ortiz who brought this issue to light. One neighbor concerned for her well-being and that of others, and taking action. This is the kind of community involvement and advocacy I strongly support and encourage.
