Community Collaborative Commission to host public town hall meeting

Hybrid May 12 meeting to update public and take questions

The diverse Community Collaborative Commission – charged with helping to create a comprehensive community oriented policing policy for the City of Milwaukee – will host a public town hall meeting on Thursday, May 12 at City Hall.

The hybrid meeting will go from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on May 12 in room 301-A at City Hall, 200 E. Wells St., and will include virtual and in-person participation (virtual participation instructions are below).

Nate Hamilton, chair of the Community Collaborative Commission (CCC), said the meeting will offer a prime opportunity for the body to update the community on its work to put together a “cohesive and well thought out” community oriented policing policy with the Milwaukee Police Department.

“It’s our goal to bring forth the best possible community oriented policing policy for the citizens of the City of Milwaukee,” Mr. Hamilton said. “To do that, we must keep the lines of communication open with the public, and allow them to not only hear what we have been up to, but to also listen and take questions that they may have.”

Mr. Hamilton said other topics expected to be discussed include the Collins settlement agreement, the work of the Community Research Committee related to holding a community survey, and the Community Justice Institute report that was released at the end of March.

Representatives from the MPD, Fire and Police Commission and ACLU are expected to be present, as well as the members of the CCC.

Members of the public will be limited to two minutes when asking a question and anyone planning to attend virtually must pre-register. Here’s the link to pre-register:

The CCC was created to provide a forum for and solicit community input regarding policing and law enforcement policies, procedures, and practices in Milwaukee. The commission is focusing specifically on the treatment of members of minority, LGBTQ, disability, and other historically underserved and underrepresented communities. The CCC’s responsibilities seek to improve trust between law enforcement and city residents by asking for community input and concerns on Police Department operations, policies, and procedures, conducting an annual survey of Milwaukee residents that belong to communities that are statistically more likely to interact with members of the Police Department, identifying and evaluating the effectiveness of progressive policing strategies deployed in other cities, and presenting quarterly updates to the Common Council.
