During yesterday’s meeting of the Common Council, we took a moment to provide special recognition to Dr. Joan Prince as she retired after more than 20 years of dedicated service to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the City of Milwaukee. Mayor Tom Barrett also attended the virtual presentation to provide his well-wishes and declare yesterday “Dr. Joan Prince Day” throughout the city.
Her accomplishments are endless. Dr. Prince received four degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, including being the first African American recipient of a Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology and Master’s in Clinical Laboratory Sciences.
In 2012, Dr. Prince was nominated by President Barack Obama to the key administrative post of Alternate Representative to the 67th General Assembly of the United Nations, with the honorary rank of Ambassador. She also served as a member of the 2013 United States Delegation to the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), appointed by Secretary John Kerry and Ambassador Susan E. Rice.
This is all in addition to serving in leadership positions locally including on the Greater Milwaukee Foundation Board of Trustees and the Milwaukee Public Library Board of Trustees, among many, many others.
Regardless of what she decides to do next, we know Dr. Prince will continue to be a role model and inspiration while uplifting her community to make it the best possible place for everyone, something we are all thankful for.
