Common Council approves of ARPA funding for MLK Library development
During yesterday’s meeting of the Common Council, the Council approved of using $4.2 million in federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding to support the new Martin Luther King Branch Library development at W. Locust St. and N. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. The file was sponsored by Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs whose district the new library will reside in.
“Over the years we have done a tremendous job of reimagining our libraries, and I cannot wait for the new Martin Luther King Library to come to the 6th District and serve the surrounding community,” said Alderwoman Coggs. The Alderwoman added that the new library will be part of a mixed-use development by General Capital Group and Emem Group to develop 93 apartments and a new 17,000-square-foot MLK library. During a virtual community meeting about the development proposal last week, residents and others expressed support for the project, which will enhance a “vitally important community hub for the neighborhood,” she said.The co-sponsors of the MLK branch development ARPA proposal include Alderman Nik Kovac, Alderman Michael J. Murphy, Alderwoman JoCasta Zamarripa, Alderman Ashanti Hamilton, Alderwoman Chantia Lewis, Alderwoman Marina Dimitrijevic, Alderwoman Nikiya Dodd, Alderman Russell W. Stamper, II, Alderman Cavalier Johnson and Alderman Khalif J. Rainey.
