Chairwoman Nicholson Applauds New Olmsted Way in Washington Park
MILWAUKEE – Yesterday county officials unveiled signage for the recently renamed “Olmsted Way” through Washington Park. The parkway was renamed through a resolution sponsored by County Board Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson.
“Prior to redistricting, I represented Washington Park for six years and it will always hold a special meaning for me,” said Chairwoman Nicholson. “I worked hard with community members to advance our vision for a safer, more accessible park that uplifts our rich history including naming this parkway after Frederick Law Olmsted. His legacy shows what can be accomplished when we prioritize shared green spaces designed for the entire community. It is a spirit that I bring in my work on the County Board. I’d like to give a special thanks to Milwaukee County Parks and Washington Park Partners for their tireless work on this effort.”
Frederick Law Olmsted, considered the father of American landscape architecture, designed Washington Park, Lake Park, Riverside Park, and East Newberry Boulevard in Milwaukee. He is best known for designing Central Park in New York City.
Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum recently hosted the “In the Park with Frederick Law Olmsted: A Vision for Milwaukee” exhibit in honor of Olmsted’s 200th birthday.
