WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin joined Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and 46 of their colleagues in introducing a Senate Resolution recognizing June as “LGBTQ Pride Month.” The resolution notes major milestones in the fight for equal treatment of LGBTQ Americans and resolves to continue efforts to achieve full equality for LGBTQ individuals. This is the second year in a row Baldwin has helped introduce a Pride Month resolution in the Senate after President Trump broke with an eight-year tradition in the White House and failed to offer an official presidential proclamation recognizing June as Pride Month.

“America is right to be proud of the progress we have made to pass on to the next generation a country that is more equal, not less. Every June, communities across America celebrate Pride Month and this resolution recognizes the march towards full equality in our country,” said Senator Baldwin. “We have more work to do and I believe America is ready to take the next steps forward. Together, let’s continue to break down barriers so that every American has an equal opportunity to dream the same dreams, chase the same ambitions and have the same freedom to succeed.”

“We must always stand with our LGBTQ friends and neighbors – not just during the month of June, but year round,” said Senator Brown. “I hope all Ohioans will join me in celebrating the accomplishments and courage of the LGBTQ community, and commit themselves to continuing the fight for equality for all.”

The resolution is also cosponsored by Senators Michael Bennet (D-CO), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Cory Booker (D-NJ), Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Ben Cardin (D-MD), Tom Carper (D-DE), Bob Casey (D-PA), Chris Coons (D-DE), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), Joe Donnelly (D-IN), Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), Richard Durbin (D-IL), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Kamala Harris (D-CA), Maggie Hassan (D-NH), Martin Heinrich (D-NM), Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND), Mazie Hirono (D-HI), Doug Jones (D-AL), Tim Kaine (D-VA), Angus King (I-ME), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Claire McCaskill (D-MO), Ed Markey (D-MA), Bob Menendez (D-NJ), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Chris Murphy (D-CT), Patty Murray (D-WA),  Bill Nelson (D-FL), Gary Peters (D-MI), Jack Reed (D-RI), Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Brian Schatz (D-HI), Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Tina Smith (D-MN), Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Jon Tester (D-MT), Tom Udall (D-NM), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Mark Warner (D-VA), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and Ron Wyden (D-OR).

Senator Baldwin is a lead sponsor of the Equality Act, comprehensive federal legislation to expand civil rights laws to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.
