Assistant Chief James Harpole Withdraws Candidacy for Acting/Interim MPD Chief
The board members and staff of the FPC have reluctantly accepted this news and wish to thank Assistant Chief Harpole for his over 30 years of service to our community.
On February 7, 2018 the Fire and Police Commission (FPC) Chairman Steven DeVougas and Executive Director MaryNell Regan received a letter dated February 6 from Assistant Chief James Harpole of the Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) announcing the withdrawal of his candidacy from the selection process for the position of Acting/Interim Police Chief. Assistant Chief Harpole further informed the FPC that he will be retiring from the MPD, with his last working day being February 16, 2018.
The board members and staff of the FPC have reluctantly accepted this news and wish to thank Assistant Chief Harpole for his over 30 years of service to our community. He is a Milwaukee native who began his career with the department as a Police Aide, and while rising through the ranks he has consistently demonstrated the highest standards of character and integrity. FPC Chairman DeVougas commented that “Assistant Chief Harpole has been an asset to our community throughout his career and his knowledge, skill and leadership will certainly be missed”.
Despite this announcement, the selection process that the FPC has underway to select the Interim/Acting Chief for the MPD will continue as planned with the remaining two candidates. The public is invited to attend a candidate forum at 5:00 pm on Thursday February 8, where questions from the public will be discussed among the candidates. This event is being held at the Mexican Fiesta Flores Hall at 2997 S. 20th Street. The FPC intends to name the Acting/Interim Chief during the regularly scheduled meeting on February 15.
