[Milwaukee]—ArtWorks for Milwaukee is pleased to announce it has been approved by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to receive a Challenge America award of $10,000. This is the first NEA grant awarded to ArtWorks for Milwaukee and it will support the environmental arts internship with the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD), Northwest Side Community Development Corporation, WaterMarks, and others. This grant is one of 262 Challenge America awards totaling $2.62 million that were announced by the NEA as part of its first round of fiscal year 2023 grants.

“The National Endowment for the Arts is proud to support arts projects in communities nationwide,” said NEA Chair Maria Rosario Jackson, PhD. “Projects such as this one with ArtWorks for Milwaukee strengthen arts and cultural ecosystems, provide equitable opportunities for arts participation and practice, and contribute to the health of our communities and our economy.”

High school-age interns who participate in ArtWorks environmental arts internship are working on several public art projects, including storm drain art on Milwaukee’s north and south sides. The storm drains transformed by the students, spread the message of MMSD’s water quality campaign “One Water, Our Water” to signify the importance of access to clean, drinkable water in Milwaukee.

“This partnership helped creatively connect the community to our waterways and brought together many initiatives across the city,” said MMSD Public Engagement Manager Christina Taddy. “Through community conversations, residents gained a better understanding of how their actions impact our water and interns listened to the communities’ environmental interests and translated that into artwork. These conversations also raised awareness of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District’s flood management and restoration work happening along the Kinnickinnic River. We are excited to continue this partnership and raise more awareness of our water through art.”
