Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs invites residents to take part in the Juneteenth Day festivities scheduled for tomorrow, June 19, 2014, from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. between Burleigh St. and Center St.
The annual Juneteenth Day Celebration is a nationwide event commemorating African American freedom proclaimed to all slaves in the South by Union General Gordon Granger on June 19, 1865 in Galveston, Texas, nearly two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln. Thursday’s festivities will mark the 43rd annual recognition of Juneteenth in Milwaukee.
The event is free and open to the public. Alderwoman Coggs herself will take part in the kickoff parade and other events throughout the day.
