The North End Phase Two Groundbreaking Photos

A ceremonial groundbreaking took place at the corner of Pleasant and Water streets today for the Portrait and Silhouette buildings at The North End, collectively known as Phase Two of The North End. A number of public officials were on hand representing the large number of public funding sources required to get the project off the ground (or more aptly, in the ground) with the state of private financing for development.

United Methodist Children’s Services Phase III Holds Groundbreaking Celebration

Although the official groundbreaking ceremony was held this past weekend, the United Methodist Children's Services (UMCS) Phase III development is well under construction. The 10-unit mixed-use apartment building, to be located at 3800 West Lisbon Ave., will provide quality affordable housing for low-income families.

Mixed-Use East Library Proposals Meet the Neighbors

Wednesday night, Alderman Nik Kovac held a public meeting to allow feedback to be voiced regarding the three proposed alternatives for the redevelopment of the one-story East Library into a mixed-use facility. The meeting was a follow-up to a meeting last November discussing the potential of issuing a request-for-proposal (RFP) for the redevelopment of the East Library site. Attendees at the meeting were provided with an update on the process and allowed to ask questions about the process and proposals. The predictable East Side public meeting questions were aired, but which, if any, of the proposals will be selected?

Green Development Planned for S. 2nd Street

Kaufmann LeSage, led by Juli Kaufmann, plans to develop a four-story 30,000 square foot environmentally-friendly commercial building, located at 538 S. 2nd Street in the Historic Walker's Point Neighborhood. The project, known as the Milwaukee Fix,will take green development to the next level, going beyond LEED standards.

City Committee Approves Financing Agreement for Summerfest South End Project (Renderings)

Earlier this week the Zoning, Neighborhoods & Development Committee recommended the approval of a Redevelopment Authority of the City of Milwaukee financing agreement with Milwaukee World Festival, Inc.

The Moderne Likely to Receive Public Financing

The Moderne, the long awaited project on the corner of 3rd and Juneau, is moving ahead. The City, through RACM, is aiming to provide $10,000,000 in financial assistance to the project. A deal that is very likely to be approved. The building is to be largely an apartment building with first floor retail and a few condos at the top three floors. Originally intended to be 80 condos, the project is now 154 apartments and 33 condos spread over 30 floors.

Common Council Debates Water Deal

Both, New Land Enterprises' apartment proposal and Mandel Group's UWM dormitory proposal were approved without any debate on the floor and both are expect to break ground after winter.

Potential Changes to the RFP Process

Milwaukee should explore how land sales are managed in order to achieve the highest and best use. If Milwaukee can become better at converting land from public and vacant to private and developed it will only be a benefit to the entire city by building a better urban fabric and raising the city tax base.

Zoning Committee Approves Multiple Land Sales

Resolution 080271 would authorize the land sale of nineteen City of Milwaukee (RACM) properties to create three mixed-use developments within the Haymarket Square neighborhood. These three development would consist of the Sixth Street Market, Vineyard Place, and Walnut Hill.
