The Milwaukee Electric Railway & Light Company – System
Join author Charles Damaske as he provides an historic overview of Milwaukee’s past interurban rail lines and some city service via the Milwaukee Street Car Line. This program includes information on the Burlington Line, East Troy Line, Lakeside Line, Milwaukee Northern Line, Rapid Transit Line, Watertown Line, West Junction to Waukesha Line, and the Milwaukee – Racine – Kenosha Line. Damaske is the author of Along the Right-of-Way, a series of books exploring events that occurred along the service routes of the Milwaukee Electric Railway & Light Company. 10th Annual Community Development Summit
The 10th Annual Community Development Summit will be held on the morning of Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at the Italian Conference Center in Milwaukee. “Foreclosure: Impacts and Opportunities” will provide an update of the foreclosure situation in Milwaukee and innovative approaches currently being utilized to address the issue. Port of Milwaukee Redevelopment Plan
Alderman Zielinski is holding a neighborhood meeting to discuss the Port of Milwaukee Redevelopment Plan on Wednesday, September 1st, 6 p.m. at the Port of Milwaukee, 2323 S. Lincoln Memorial Dr. The City of Milwaukee approved the boundary for the Port Redevelopment Plan in March 2009 and directed the Department of City Development to prepare a draft of the Plan. Milwaukee Intermodal Station Train Shed Public Meeting
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is announcing a public information meeting to discuss reconstruction of the train shed at the Milwaukee Intermodal Station. The train shed is a 50,000 square foot facility immediately south of the station that is used to protect trains and passengers from the elements. The project will bring the facility into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The new structure will be 121 feet wide, 400 feet long, and 56 feet high. The train shed will include a partial mezzanine spanning 5 tracks and 3 boarding platforms, stairways, escalators, elevators, ventilation systems, lighting, and signage. The meeting is scheduled from 4 to 7 p.m. on August 24, 2010 at the Milwaukee Intermodal Station Atrium, 433 West St. Paul Avenue, Milwaukee and will include information on the train shed’s reconstruction. Members of the WisDOT project team will be on hand to answer questions and discuss the project. The public is encouraged to attend the meeting, provide input and ask questions concerning the project. Drawings showing the proposed train shed will be on display. If you are unable to attend the workshop or would like more information, contact Alyssa Macy at (414) 550-9407. The Monarch Trail Summer Moon Picnic!
Join the Monarch Trail Friends for a picnic and watch the sunset and moonrise over the County Grounds. Irish Music provided by: Ceol Cairde www.ceolcairde.com Where: The Monarch Trail – Milwaukee County Grounds, 9480 W Watertownplank Rd. Wauwatosa, Wisconsin When: 6:00 – 8 pm, (simultaneous sunset/moonrise: 7:15 pm) What: There will be a guided tour at 6:15 pm Why: Due to development plans, this may be one of the last opportunities to see the moonrise and sunset in this vast open space. Bring: Pack a picnic or snacks, and skeeto repellant 2010 will be a much better year to view the migration. This pre-migration event will provide information for people who would like to come out in September to see where they gather and where they roost at night. Themonarchtrail.org will update the migration daily the 2nd and 3rd week in September. Rain Date: We will hold a Migration launch on September 11th, same time, same place. City Plan Commission Meeting
The City Plan Commission (CPC) is the City’s official planning body established under State statute and is responsible for master planning activities. The CPC advises the Common Council on a variety of land development issues including zoning map changes, revisions in the zoning ordinance, subdivision approvals, business improvement districts, street and alley vacations, public land disposition and acquisition, new streets and the approval of development plans in certain overlay districts. Irish Fest Summer School
If you’ve ever wanted to learn more about Irish music, dance, song, arts, history, language and culture – this is the opportunity you’ve been waiting for. To help celebrate the 30th anniversary of Milwaukee Irish Fest, a talented and engaging group of instructors will pass along their knowledge to those who enroll in the 2010 Milwaukee Irish Fest Summer School at the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE). Eschweiler Excursions Part II
Historic Milwaukee Inc. has planned a second set of trolley tours of Eschweiler buildings on Thursday, September 16 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. and again on Saturday, September 18 from 11:30 to 2:30 p.m. The tour will be narrated by Win Thrall, curator of the 2007 exhibition “Alexander Eschweiler in Milwaukee” at the Charles Allis Art Museum – the first exhibition in history to feature the work of Alexander Eschweiler. Limited edition exhibition catalogues will be available for purchase for tour-goers only. This year the tour will focus on commercial buildings in the downtown as well as a selection of residences in the East Side. One step-off tour will be into the 1937 Art Moderne, Hotel Metro once known as the Mariner Building to get a great view of the Telephone Building from the Hotel’s rooftop. Another highlight has been added to end the tour. There will be a stop into the Wisconsin Architectural Archive in the Milwaukee Public Library. The library’s Humanities Department staff members will present building research information and there will be a showing of a short DVD documenting the 2007 “Alexander Eschweiler in Milwaukee” exhibition. The Archive will have architectural renderings and Mark Heffron’s exhibition photographs on display. Historic Milwaukee is pleased to be collaborating with event sponsors Hotel Metro and Thomas and Gabriele Eschweiler, as well as partnering with the Milwaukee Public Library and the Wisconsin Architectural Archive. Common Council Meeting
The Brookfield Common Council is holding a public meeting to discuss the station location for the Amtrak Hiawatha extension. Summer Sizzle Jazz Festival
Ray Silkman will heat up the Main Stage at the Historic Third Ward Jazz Festival: Summer Sizzle, which runs 11am to 11pm, Saturday, August 7, in Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward. Featuring four stages of continuous jazz, the event will take place on North Broadway between E. St. Paul Avenue and E. Menomonee Street. Admission is free. Eighteen local, regional and Chicago jazz groups complete the musical lineup with a variety of styles: traditional, Latin, swing, smooth, Dixieland and more. Food highlights at the festival include fresh pizza cooked in a wood burning oven, chicken on a spit, roasted corn and other ethnic and American dishes. Committee of the Whole
Some matters coming before the County Board have a significant policy impact or a unique set of circumstances which overlap specific committee jurisdiction. One example is the closing of a major county facility. On such occasions, the Committee of the Whole will meet at the call of the County Board Chairman.
