Historic building in Milwaukee’s Historic Mitchell Street neighborhood. Originally built for the Hills Department Store. Currently occupied by the Mitchell Street Library and Alexander Lofts apartments.
In 2014 plans were announced to convert the building to 57 market-rate apartments and to a house a relocated branch of the Milwaukee Public Library. The nearby Forest Home Library closed to make way for the new Mitchell Street branch. The project was developed by Gorman & Company.
The library occupies 16,000 sq-ft on the first floor.
The redevelopment won a 2018 Mayor’s Design Award.
