Welcome Back, 9th District Educators!
Statement of Alderwoman Larresa Taylor - September 1, 2026
I want to extend a heartfelt welcome back to teachers throughout the City of Milwaukee, and especially to the dedicated educators serving the 9th District.
I want you to know that your presence in our schools is recognized as so much more than simply being a teacher. Every day, you bring dedication, commitment, patience, and compassion into the lives of our children.
For many students, you are not only the person who teaches them reading, mathematics, science, or history — you are also a source of encouragement. You are a trusted adult. You provide a sense of safety, stability, and belonging. Sometimes, you are the person who recognizes when a child needs a little extra support, a kind word, or simply someone who believes in them.
That responsibility is tremendous, and the impact you have on our young people can last a lifetime.
Here in the 9th District, we are proud to have 20 schools, each filled with educators who work every day to make a difference in the lives of our children. As we begin this school year, we are also excited to launch our City of Milwaukee, Common Council Teacher of the Year recognition.
We are asking each of our 20 schools to select and submit one Teacher of the Year to represent their school. From those 20 outstanding educators, one teacher will ultimately be selected as the 9th District Teacher of the Year and will receive special recognition at Milwaukee City Hall.
This is an opportunity for us to celebrate the educators who consistently go above and beyond—not only in the classroom, but in the encouragement, leadership, compassion, and support they provide to their students, colleagues, and school communities.
As Alderwoman of the 9th District, I am extremely proud of the educators who have chosen to serve the children and families of our community.
Please know that your work is seen, your commitment is appreciated, and your contribution is valued. Thank you for choosing this respected and incredibly important profession.
Thank you for continuing to show up for Milwaukee’s children, and thank you for helping us prepare the next generation to dream bigger, achieve more, and become the leaders of tomorrow. I look forward to visiting each of our schools, meeting with our teachers, and celebrating the outstanding educators who make the 9th District a wonderful place for our children to learn and grow.
