MADISON, Wis. —  The Marquette University women’s soccer team (3-0-1, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) earned a tough 1-1 draw at Wisconsin (1-1-1, 0-0-0 Big Ten) on Sunday evening in non-conference action.

The two sides battled through a scoreless opening 45 minutes, with neither team able to find the back of the net. Marquette and Wisconsin combined for limited offensive opportunities, as both defenses kept the opposing attack from generating a shot on goal.

Marquette goalkeeper Mia Hurd kept the Badgers off the scoreboard in the opening half, making two saves to help the Golden Eagles carry the clean sheet into the second half.

Wisconsin eventually broke through in the second half following a video review. After the officials reviewed contact inside the penalty area and determined there had been a push from behind, Wisconsin was awarded a penalty kick. The Badgers converted from the spot to take a 1-0 lead.

Marquette continued to battle and found its equalizer in the 79th minute. The Golden Eagles’ attack finally broke through late in the match, with Kaylie Sheehan finding the back of the net to level the score at 1-1.

The Golden Eagles’ defense held firm over the final minutes, securing the draw against the Badgers.

NOTES:

  • Marquette snaps a five-game losing streak against the Badgers.
  • Sheehan scored the first goal of her collegiate career.
