WBB Stumbles Against No. 10 Iowa State in Florida

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Facing its first ranked opponent of the season, Marquette fell 84-73 to No. 10 Iowa State in the first game of the GEICO Coconut Hoops held at Alico Arena on the campus of FGCU.

Jaidynn Mason led the Golden Eagles with 17 points while Skylar Forbes added 13. Four Cyclones finished in double figures with 18 each coming from post players Audi Crooks and Addy Brown.

Iowa State jumped out to 15-4 lead less than five minutes into the contest. A 10-0 run prompted Marquette to call its first timeout. The stoppage calmed the Golden Eagles and saw MU connect on four its next six attempts to pull back within five at 20-15 following back-to-back triples from Lee Volker and Forbes.

A steal by Mason to start the second made it three-point game. The Cyclones though extend their advantage back to 10 just over three minutes later. With MU’s deficit standing at seven with under three minutes to play in the half, ISU doubled its lead with a 7-0 run late. A bucket from Charia Smith in the final 30 seconds made a 47-35 game heading into the half.

Foul trouble was issue an issue throughout the opening 20 minutes as four Golden Eagles finished the half with two fouls, including Halle Vice who had three fouls in just eight minutes.

Mason continued to step up Marquette, opening up the third with a corner 3 to cut the deficit back to single digits but the Cyclones answered back with the next eight. Jordan Muelemans ended a stretch of six missed shots for MU with a trey from the corner. Kennedi Perkins dropped one late in the half to cut the deficit to 13 but Iowa State had an answer again, outscoring MU 10-5 during the final two-and-half minutes of the third to go up 70-52 with 10 minutes play.

With ISU building its largest lead of the day at 21 with three-and-a-half minutes to go, the Golden Eagles rattled off 10 straight to end the game with six of those points coming on a pair of corner 3’s from Kam Herring.

Marquette will face Gonzaga in the consolation bracket on Sunday. Tipoff is set for 11 a.m. ET/10 a.m. CT at Alico Arena.
