WEC Deactivates More Than 192,000 Voters

MADISON – The Wisconsin Elections Commission announced today it has deactivated 192,369 voter registrations through the Four-Year Maintenance process required by law.

The individuals deactivated by the WEC had not voted in the past four years and did not have a record of responding to a mailing from the agency regarding their registration status, said Meagan Wolfe, the administrator of the Wisconsin Elections Commission.

“Maintaining accurate voter rolls is a year-round priority,” said Wolfe. “Through the Four-Year Maintenance process and ongoing collaboration with local election officials, we ensure that the voter registration database reflects current, eligible voters by deactivating those who have moved, passed away, or have otherwise become inactive.”

2025 Four-Year Voter Record Maintenance

The Commission is required by state law every two years to conduct voter record maintenance to identify individuals who have not voted in the previous four years and to deactivate their registration status unless they notify their clerk that they wish to remain registered.

Wolfe said the required review helps ensure the integrity of the statewide voter database. Individuals whose voter registration status is deactivated can no longer vote using that voter record and must re-register to vote at their current address.

In June, the Commission identified 202,593 registered voters with no record of voting since the November 2020 presidential election. The Commission mailed “Notice of Suspension” postcards to these voters, asking them whether they wanted to remain active on the state’s voter list.

To remain active, voters had 30 days to mail a return postcard to their municipal clerk, which 9,501 voters did. Voters with no record of responding or whose postcard was returned as undeliverable by the Post Office were deactivated.
