Golf Finishes Runner-Up at The Johnnie-O at Sea Island, Lyons Finishes T-3

Lyons ties career-best finish

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, GeorgiaMarquette University men’s golf finished runner-up at The Johnnie-O at Sea Island on Tuesday with Max Lyons finished in a tie for third individually.

The Golden Eagles shot even par over two rounds (280-280-560) to finish one stroke behind Cincinnati (288-271-559) on the leaderboard. MU has finished runner-up three times this season with a pair of wins at the Redhawk Intercollegiate and BIG EAST Match Play.

Max Lyons finished tied for third overall at 6-under (65-69-134), his second top three performance this season that tied his career-best finish. The senior was one of just three players in the field to shoot
in the 60s both rounds. His first round 5-under 65 was a season-low.

Johan Widal finished tied for 23rd at 2-over and has finished inside the top 25 in six-of-seven events this season.

Vinny Cervantes put together a career-best tied for 23rd finish after going 2-over. His final round 68 was a season-low round.

The tournament was shortened to 36 holes. Play was suspended at the beginning of the day Monday due to high winds. The first round began at 3:30 p.m. CT and the Golden Eagles finished nine holes before play was suspended due to darkness. The second round resumed at 7 a.m. CT on Tuesday morning.

The Golden Eagles are coming off a ninth-place finish at the Puerto Rico Classic on Feb. 10-12 at Grande Reserve Golf Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. Johan Widal led MU with a tie for 11th finish with an 8-under 208. Seniors Max Lyons and Patrick Adler recorded MU’s best final rounds with a 6-under 66 and 4-under-68, respectively.

Adler is the highest-ranked BIG EAST golfer at No. 54 in the nation. He won medalist honors at both the Windon Memorial Classic and RedHawk Intercollegiate in the fall and boasts a career-best 70.72 scoring average (-0.61 strokes per round) to lead the team.

Lyons led the Golden Eagles a year ago at the event, finishing tied for 26th after a 1-under 215 with rounds under par.

Widal earned BIG EAST Male Golfer of the Week after his performance at the Puerto Rico Classic in MU’s first event of the spring in February.
