No. 21/22 #MUBB Travels To Georgetown Saturday Night
Peacock features 7 p.m. CT broadcast
The No. 21/22 Marquette University men’s basketball team (21-7, 12-5 BIG EAST) hits the road to face Georgetown (16-12, 7-10 BIG EAST) on Saturday, March 1 at 7 p.m. CT from Capital One Arena. Peacock features the broadcast, with John Fanta (play-by-play) and Tarik Turner (analyst) calling the action. Following Saturday’s outing, the Golden Eagles will wrap up the road portion of the regular-season schedule on March 5 at UConn.
Marquette Owns Advantage In All-Time Series
Marquette owns a 24-14 advantage in the all-time series, with the Golden Eagles claiming wins in 14 of the last 17 outings and each of the last seven games.
The programs first met during the 1941-42 campaign and the Hoyas were able to claim a 35-34 victory. The next meeting didn’t come until the 1971-72 season and Marquette posted an 88-44 winning decision.
The Golden Eagles rallied for a 74-66 win over the Hoyas on Jan. 7, 2025 at Fiserv Forum after trailing by as many as 14 points. Guard Chase Ross led all scorers with a career-best 27 points and six steals.
Marquette Lets It Fly In Latest Win
Marquette, which hadn’t knocked down more than 11 3-pointers in a game in any of the team’s previous 10 outings, was 12-of-15 from deep in the first half of Tuesday night’s 82-52 win over Providence.
Seven different players knocked down treys for the Golden Eagles and 12 of the team’s 13 baskets in the opening 20 minutes were 3-pointers.
MU’s 30-point victory matched the team’s third-largest winning margin (34, most recently vs. DePaul, 2/21/24) in BIG EAST Conference action.
Continuity Is Key To Recent Success
Since the 2022-23 campaign, Marquette is the only power conference team that hasn’t signed a NCAA Division I transfer, leading to as consistent a starting lineup as any program in the country.
Through games of Feb. 26, Marquette is one of just two squads (St. Mary’s) to feature the same starting lineup (Jones, Mitchell, Joplin, Ross, Gold). Two years ago, Marquette and Marshall were the only two teams in the country to utilize the same starting five the entire season.
Joplin, who hasn’t missed an outing in his 133-game career, has a chance to pass Lazar Hayward (138) for most career appearances. Jones and Mitchell will also finish in the top-10 this season and junior Chase Ross might have a shot at the top spot in 2025-26.
Marquette’s stability has allowed the program to be ranked for 48-straight weeks in the Associated Press Top-25, the fourth-best active streak in the country. MU was ranked a program-best 166-straight weeks from 1970-80.
Ben Is Golden On Career Night
Junior forward Ben Gold netted a career-high 17 points in Tuesday night’s win over Providence, matching Kam Jones for the team lead in points in the 82-52 victory.
The Wellington, New Zealand native finished 7-of-9 from the floor overall and 3-of-5 from behind the 3-point line. His seven made field goals marked a career high and he also found time to chip in six rebounds, an assist and a blocked shot in an efficient 22 minutes of action.
